Update 3.05: Halloween

A small update has been dropped by Hello Games just in time for Halloween! The title of the update is aptly named the “Halloween Update”.

The focus of the update is to expand the gameplay associated with the derelict freighters that were introduced in the Desolation update earlier this year.

You can read the full patch notes and release information here.

The Portal Repository has been updated to reflect this latest update. New addresses will now include the “Version: Halloween” tag and will be included in the Favorites page since no major procedural changes have occurred.

Reminder: If you find an interesting derelict freighter don’t forget to share the portal address to any planet in that system and include the tag “Derelict Freighter” so other players can check it out too! Each star system has a unique type of derelict freighter so players can share coordinates to interesting, and spooky, wrecks.

Happy Halloween Travellers!

Running a fan website for the No Man’s Sky community has been one of the best experiences in my life. What started out as a personal hobby back in late 2017 has blossomed into an international gaming website used by thousands of people every day! It’s been incredibly fun to provide this service to the dedicated fans of No Man’s Sky and I hope to keep the momentum going.

What some might not know is that I this built this website myself, pay for all the server hosting, domain name registration and on-going maintenance out of my own pocket. The Portal Repository is a passion project and I’m a one-man-band running everything behind-the-scenes. In early 2019 the site quickly outgrew the tiny server it was hosted on and I had to scale up to a more expensive server in order to keep up with the increased traffic. With the release of No Man’s Sky: Origins I am once again facing the need to scale up the hosting servers in order to accommodate the higher traffic.

In order to help cover the costs of hosting I made the difficult decision last year to begin serving ads on this website. This was a difficult decision because I personally hate internet ads. They’re annoying, intrusive and unsightly. But, they also pay the bills.

If you’re a fan of The Portal Repository and want to help keep it online there are a few different ways you can support this website:

1.  Donate via PayPal

2. Purchase merch from our TeeSpring store

3. Disable your Adblockers on The Portal Repository

4. Become a Patreon Supporter Become a Patron!

As Patreon support increases I will scale back ads on this site. Here’s how it works:

$25/mo on Patreon = 25% reduction in ads

$50/mo on Patreon = 50% reduction in ads

$100/mo on Patreon = 75% reduction in ads

$200/mo on Patreon = 100% of ads removed

Finally, I’d like to thank everyone who has donated, bought merch or been a Patreon supporter over the past few years. In particular I’d like to give a shout out to the seven people who are still Patreon supporters today:

Katie Booth,DJ Dark Cloud, Michael Stroup, Ted Dees, Kyle Culver, Daniel George and Alex Moberg

New Biomes and Tags for Origins

Now that we’ve all had some time to play the new Origins update it has become apparent that some new biome categories and tags are needed to support some of the content that was recently introduced. Here are the new categories and tags that have been added:

  1. New Biomes:
    1. Marsh
    2. Volcanic
  2. New system tags:
    1. Binary Star Systems
    2. Ternary (trinary) Star Systems
  3. New planet tags:
    1. Cybernetic Lifeforms
    2. Sand Worms
    3. Colossal Archive Buildings
    4. Mountains

The Origins update introduced some significant changes to procedural generation. Although the primary biomes and terrain for existing planets were unchanged (lush biome planets are still considered lush and the terrain is still the same) all the flora and fauna have been regenerated. Additionally, some existing planets have new lighting effects and in some cases the portal has actually been relocated on existing worlds (but not in all cases). As a result, some tags like “All Creatures Discovered” have been rendered obsolete and some bases may be farther away from the portal now.

In the previous iterations of Atlas Rises and NEXT the proc-gen changes were so significant that it warranted a complete archive of the old addresses. In Origins, however, since primary biomes and bases remain unchanged I decided not to completely archive all the addresses from any of the Beyond iterations.

Instead, any address from one of the Beyond iterations just has a green advisory banner that informs players that the address was submitted before Origins and as a result some of the system and planetary characteristics may have changed.

I also modified the Top Ten Addresses page to only show addresses submitted during the Origins update. Make sure you smash that “Like” thumbs-up button to vote for addresses that you enjoy! If you’d like to view the Top Ten Beyond Addresses you can still do so at this archived page.

Last but not least, I changed the color scheme of the meta data table of the portal addresses to give this site a fresh look in the spirit of the new Origins update.

If there are any other tags, categories or changes you think I should make to The Portal Repository please leave a comment below.

Version 3.0: Origins

Today Sean Murray and Hello Games released the patch notes for the next update: Version 3.0 Origins: (Read Full Patch Notes Here)

This new update brings a lot of exciting features that long-time players have always wanted.

Update 3.0, Origins, dramatically expands the universe of No Man’s Sky. Explore a stranger, richer and more varied universe, with deeper planetary diversity, dramatic new terrain, a host of new creatures, new weather conditions, colossal buildings, and much more.

Whilst flora, fauna and atmospheric conditions have changed throughout the universe, existing worlds will retain their old character, allowing player bases to remain undisturbed.

No Man’s Sky: Origins

Today Sean Murray and Hello Games announced the next No Man’s Sky update, titled “Origins“. This update is expected to be released sometime in the week of September 21st.

Four years ago we announced FOUNDATION, our first major update for No Man’s Sky, we promised “It won’t be our largest update, but it is the start of something”. Those words were true at the time, and they ring true for Origins. We called it Origins because it is the beginning of something new, as No Man’s Sky continues to grow and evolve.

Beyond came out last year, bringing VR and hugely expanded Online play, and since then we have focused on releasing more regular updates. SYNTHESIS, BYTEBEAT, LIVING SHIP, EXO MECH, CROSSPLAY, and DESOLATION have been some of our most popular, surprising and transformative updates – leading No Man’s Sky to have its biggest year to date.

We know there is a huge appetite in the community for No Man’s Sky content, and the team has worked our socks off this year to deliver in difficult circumstances. We have been quiet, but we are always listening and focusing on improving the game that our team loves and feels so passionately about.

This update will be another small step in a longer journey. We hope you can join us.

Thank you,
Sean

New Update 2.6: Desolation

HelloGames have released a new No Man’s Sky update called Desolation.

New features include salvageable (and dangerous!) derelict freighters, freighter customization, new light/bloom effects and new storyline lore.

Read the full patch notes.

“Each star system has one derelict freighter style, allowing Travellers to share the portal address of systems with particularly interesting wrecks.”

I have added a new tag to the portal submission form for “Derelict Freighter” so players can share their interesting and system-specific wrecks with the community.

Share Your Friend Code

Good Morning No Man’s Skyers!

I just wanted to do a quick update and let everyone know that a new field has been added to the portal address submission form: Friend Code.

All No Man’s Sky players have a unique code (ex. XXXX-1234-ABC1D) that can be used to add other players to your friends group, making it easier to join each other’s games.

If you would like to share your own friend code with the world feel free to do so when you submit your portal address. Your friend code will be displayed underneath your player name and will be visible to everyone.

Obviously filling in your unique friend code is optional and users should be aware that by sharing this information they may have strangers joining their games and/or requesting to be your friend in No Man’s Sky. Although some people enjoy this experience, others do not. If you use someone’s friend code to join their game please be polite and respectful at all times.

Learn more about friend codes and cross-play mechanics.

This address was last updated during the Crossplay iteration. Some planetary and system characteristics may have changed.

In-Game ARG Beginning? [Updated July 15 2020]

Last weekend season 2 of the weekend missions began and it seems we have a bit of a mystery on our hands. Iteration Ariadne who usually stands on the first ramp leading into the Space Anomaly has mysteriously disappeared!

Players that interacted with her recently saw the following dialog:

-{{I intend to face the cause of all these anomalies and disturbances myself, whatever the cost. }}-

This week the platform along the anomaly’s entrance ramp is conspicuously vacant…

Where has Iteration Ariadne gone? Players have been trying to determine the source of the disturbances and anomalies ourselves for months without success, so perhaps she’ll be able to shed more light on the situation. Or perhaps other Travellers from the anomaly will follow suit.

Whatever happens next the No Man’s Sky community will be watching closely!

[Update: July 15th, 2020] Ariadne is back in the Space Anomaly. What happened to her while she was gone? Is this even the same Ariadne who stood there before or did she die and get “reset”?

Update 2.3 – Living Ship

Today Sean Murray and Hello Games announced a new update, version 2.3 Living Ships! This update introduces new organic-based ship types, new space exploration experiences and a variety of smaller quality-of-life improvements.

You can read the full patch notes here.

Since this new update only introduces new content and does not seem to affect procedurally-generated planet/system characteristics there will be no need to archive previous version portal addresses from Beyond or Synthesis updates. New addresses published after today will be appended with the new “Game Version: Living Ships” tag.

The Melody of the Egg

It seems as if an impending update is just over the horizon as Sean Murray has recently started tweeting cryptically about eggs. This coincides with a new curiosity available to purchase at the Quicksilver Synthesis Companion called the Void Egg.

An anomalous egg. The shell is tough and leathery, and twitches when touched. A faint tapping can be heard within. From time to time, it appears to sing.

For those who would like to learn more about this mysterious item and the associated mission, USG has written up a nice guide, read it here.
